Restored Butter Factory

The current Euroa Butter Factory building was completed in 1901 after the original building had been destroyed by fire. The majestic chimney stands as a proud reminder of the building's steam-driven past, while the original slate foundations and brick walls, some nearly three quarters of a metre wide are a tribute to the era. At its peak, it was one of the biggest employers in the area and is said to have put Euroa on the map. It established a reputation for making some of the world's best quality butter - sold as the 'Shield' brand. Euroa's butter was transported to Melbourne on the train line which still carries freight between Melbourne and Sydney, for export to various countries including Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa and England.

It took 21 pounds [9.5kg] of fresh cow's milk to make each pound of butter and milk was delivered daily by horse and cart from farms throughout the local area. The original loading/receival door, hoists and many original features can still be seen in the carefully restored buildings.

After butter production ceased in 1951, the site was used for the commercial production of ice which was cut into blocks and sold for domestic and commercial use in the days before refrigerators. Sadly, the advent of home refrigerators brought about the end of this business and the once proud Euroa Butter Factory began a long period of decline. Over the next three decades it was used for various pursuits including the sale of rabbit skins and meat - and for other not quite so legal ventures, but by the 1980's the buildings were largely in ruin and much of the machinery had been scrapped. Fortunately during the 1990's successive owners began restoring the buildings and it has been saved from demolition. Major works were completed in 2003-04 when the resident pigeons were evicted and new floors were built in the factory areas. The current owners, Russell and Rebecca have continued the renovations to create a high quality, tasteful venue for functions and boutique accommodation.
